Using the T-1 as a "raw" data pipe instead of
"formatting" it into the
24 B channels and a D channel. 

With 24B+D "formatting", you may only get 24*56k (1.344mbps) or at most
24*64k (1.536 mbps).

The 56k is when the system thinks you are running voice data over the B
channel(s), as the least significant bit of every eighth byte will often
be used for extra signalling info, and since after going over multiple
lines, you can't know *which* byte (or bytes!) got compromised.

64k is when the system knows you are sending data. And often charged at
a higher rate (even these days).

But with the "raw" T-1, you can also use the bandwidth used by the D
channel (16kbps) giving 1.552 mbps.

Hmm. there may *still* be some signalling overhaed, as the figure I
typically see for a T-1 is 1.544mbps. Which implies you only gain
8kbps, not 16.
