England is not Britain.  :-)

In *SCOTLAND* Jan 1st has been a public holiday for as long as it
matters to track these things.

In England it has not been.

I can't say for sure why Jan 1st was made a public holiday in England,
but I guess that as a new holiday was being created, then selecting
something like Jan 1st would be swimming with the tide of folk wanting a
day off after the previous night's festivities.

I don't recall if it was normal at all for English companies to have
given folk the day off anyway..... sorry.
