As long as we're talking radical ideas, why not the proxy system?
Anyone who wants to be on the board could publish his qualifications and
his position on whatever HE considers the important issues to be and
invite members to send him their proxy. He would then represent THEM.
The board would consist of all candidates who have, say, 10,000 or more
proxies. Each member would vote the proxies he holds, which means some
board members would be more influential than others.
