subject: Twins IDE or not ?

-=> Quoting JEAN PARROT to MATT MC_CARTHY <=-

JP> Hello Matt, it is a lovely day today.

MM> See my note to Leonard, hopefully in this same packet.

JP> I did and your logic has me in a quandry now. I will not get
JP> the screwdriver yet. According to your philosophy, I never or
JP> very rarely do HD to HD reading/writing so I should be on two
JP> IDE cables. On the other hand, if need be this setup here would
 JP> be better if ever . . . !

JP> Another problem reared its ugly head a few days ago. This old
JP> P166 will not see the CD-ROM anymore. If I use an ERD with the
JP> OAK CD loader, ( Load DOS with CD capability )there it is so
JP> the device and connections are good. Looking at System, I see
JP> that the Primary and Secondary IDE ( Single FIFO bot of them )
JP> and the Standard PCI IDE Controler have this yellow ! showing.
JP> I uninstalled both of them by removing the PCI IDE Controler
JP> and restarted the system. I found all again and said that it
JP> installed all and it should be happy but it is not. Device
JP> Manager again shows the yellow ! and no CD device. I went to
JP> BIOS and selected Standard setup, restarted but still no CD.
 JP> Where should I look ?

Boot into Safe mode, and then go into Device manager and delete the IDE
stuff (and any other stuff that you no longer have in the system).

Then reboot. Windows doesn't actually *remove* the drivers if you just
pull the hardware or even if you remove the device after a normal boot.
You have to do it in safe mode.

And you may be *amazaed* at how many instances of some devices show up
when you check in Safe mode.
