 Ttbomk, there is no such thing as an external winmodem, or at least
as of the time when this one was made there weren't.

 You, me, and pretty much most of this echo. ;> Fwiw I have a pci
version of a sm56 w/ voice and it gave me fits too when I tried it.
Getting the right drivers loaded was the first headache since '95
kept wanting to use it's autodetect to set it up. Then there's the
matter of how much stuff you can run on a i166 w/ only 64meg ram.

 I might get the gui up and running but trying to do any comm work
was a sure shot to lock the system up or cause a reboot. :/

 If there were anything close I'd have found it. All it says abt the
adapter is that it should be a class 2 and supply 12VA which can be
abt anything. 12v {at} 1a, 24v {at} .5a, 6v {at} 2a, etc...

 Ofc now I've got more hardware to figure out. Gave a quarter each for
a pair of pci tv tuner type cards. A stb tvpci, and some version of an
ati all-in-wonder w/ presumably dvd decoding function. (least i guess
that's why the big chip has 3D RAGE II+DVD, and another w/ `video decoder')

 Should have one heck of a frankenbox if I ever locate an atx case/supply
and a few more dimms for the asus p2b board. ]:>
