1237bda23406 tech Hello Jim - --8<--cut RJT>> Oh, it sure is. People deal with entirely different RJT>> levels of stuff these days. I do too, for the most part, RJT>> which is why it's kinda funny that I have all this RJT>> knowledge that I don't use about the technology, and all RJT>> these parts that I'll probably never go through, and RJT>> spend more time than anything else sitting here RJT>> interacting with _software_ instead. JH> Oh, yeah. That was one of the original selling pitches for JH> pnp and Windows for the masses - - "Our users" will only JH> have to interact with the software, so they don't have to JH> worry with the hardware, and those hateful jumpers and all, JH> and "We're only trying to give our users what they want." JH> (Excuse me while I barf). I think COMPAQ was into PNP early on, possibly before Microsoft? I have a version of PNP from COMPAQ installed into W31 here (as I received it not my doing). The concept is not a foolish one, but Microsoft cannot control third party hardware (yet). As your other message references, hardware should ID itself when queried and not make this such a mess. If all manuf standardized this and allowed us to query the hardware PNP would work 99% of the time unless the hardware was a horrible mismatch of parts. It seems to be possible to go in and manually correct (tweak) the data so it's not all _that_ horrible yet. Again, referring to your other message, few CPUs I have checked are as advertised and many reply to software with false data. My brother's 800mhz machine tests at 788mhz? or some such and I find this is quite common. If we were allowed to replace our pictures on our driver's license and choose any name we want to (as women are prone to do) then driver's licenses as ID would be useless. > > , , > o/ Charles.Angelich \o , > __o/ > / > USA, MI < \ __\__ ___ * ATP/16bit 2.31 * ...
