I've never encountered this problem personally because I've always used the same type drives so I can't confirm it. Your logic makes sense but there might be some factors we are unaware of. For example the dma speed is set high for the first drive and perhaps the 2nd drive may read mangled bytes from time to time. I found this does indeed occur with SCSI i/o when the dma speed is set too high. Not sure if it also applies to IDE. ...
