Hi, Raymond. Quoting your message to Greg Caliri:
RM> They both got the name at the same time.....
RM> some more are
RM> Dodgers Dodgers Stadium
It's Dodger (not "Dodgers") Stadium. And if you are suggesting
that the team and the stadium debuted concurrently, you are way
off-base (pun intended). The team predates the stadium by more
than 60 years.
RM> Padres Padres Stadium (changed now)
There never was a "Padres Stadium". The team, both as a minor
and major league franchise, has played at Lane Field, Westgate
Park, and their current home, which was originally called "San
Diego Stadium". Several years ago, it was renamed "San Diego
Jack Murphy Stadium", to honor a former sportswriter who was a
major force in bringing pro football and major league baseball
to San Diego. BTW, the stadium is about to have yet _another_
name: this week, the San Diego city council voted to lease the
naming rights to Qualcomm. For the next 20 years, the new-and-
improved name will be "Qualcomm Stadium at Jack Murphy Sports
Complex"--quite a mouthful for announcers! The Padres will not
play there much longer, though. They hope to get the city to
build them a baseball-only park by the year 2000.
RM> Giants Giants Stadium (changed now)
Isn't this the baseball echo? The only Giants to play in Giants
Stadium wear shoulder pads and helmets. The baseball Giants used
the Polo Grounds during their tenure in New York. Since moving to
San Francisco, they have played in Seals Stadium and Candlestick
Park, which was renamed "3Com Park" a couple of years ago.
The official box score shows you with three errors in one message,
Raymond. But on't feel too bad--at least you weren't on national
TV, as Willie Davis was when he made three errors in one inning in
the 1966 World Series.
... End of tagline file. Please rewind.
