BL> I don't care what format he uses - it's only the mail that interests
BL> me - but as far as I can work out, Paul intends to have UUCP-only. I

Yes.

BL> prefer it that way, anyway. Once I set up for Paul on UUCP I can poll
BL> an ISR directly using the same software, but as far as I can work out,
BL> each ISR has his own software to make UUCP mail available and to
BL> select the newgroups you want... even what they use to compess the
BL> packets and zmodem!

I don't think this is correct. Thousands of people use UUCP every day,
just like fido.

BL> That leaves me with a core UUCP reader at my end,
BL> and some sort of UNIX fuckup to connect the ISP. I suppose If

You don't need any unix software to do UUCP.

BL> everything else fails, I can pick up newsgroups from the PCUG as QWK,
BL> BUT...

BL> I'm not sure what Paul intends to do with AVT. I thought his idea
BL> was to take the Fido echoes of interest and use the Internet to move
BL> them; that someone would upload AVT onto the Internet and I could get
BL> it called arsewipe{at}happyvalley.AVT.com.au or something. Now, I haven't
BL> got a clue what he intends. He's even talking about cutting LOCUSER.

What I intend doing is making happyvalley.avt available as a newsgroup,
along with happyvalley.locuser, BUT, with no-one in them! Except me, you
and anyone else calling here. Just as with fidonet, anyone who wants the
echos will start calling me, or someone who feeds from me. You see, I
don't have any control over this, so I have no idea what will happen. I
believe John T is planning on connecting, and maybe even CONVERTING the
newsgroups into fidonet PKT format, so that the existing people in fidonet
will be able to connect to the new newsgroups with their old software. I
personally would prefer that everyone uses the new internet technology
rather than fido, but there is no restriction on gating.

BL> I thought the plan was a net to bypass Fido, using the same free
BL> (or minimal charge) voluntary approach as Fido without the silly rules
BL> and wankers - someone with spare ISP time (like Paul) uploads Fido
BL> echoes onto the Internet using Internet UUCP protocols; someone else

Transporting stuff over the internet will be an option. Oh, BTW, I don't
have "free time" anymore, because I went a different route (at
ISP request), which doesn't have any minimum monthly charge.

BL> moves them interstate, and the rest of us make local calls to Paul (or
BL> whoever) to pick up the UUCP mail we want. Now Paul is saying that AVT
BL> and LOCUSER will die, not just in name but in content.

Only you can control that!

BL> In his inimitable way, Paul has confused me totally, but that's
BL> normal. I survived pkt2qwk.

How many times do I have to tell you I didn't write that shit? BFN. Paul.
