One of our friends recently expressed an interest in books including
kids with disabilities which portray them as just kids... kids who do the
same things others do and have the same feelings others do... without
patronizing or calling attention to what makes them "different".
Here's a collection of items from our home library, all available in
paperback.... :-)
FRANKLIN'S BIRTHDAY PARTY, FRANKLIN'S SCHOOL PLAY
Various Authors
Series published by Kids Can Press (Toronto, Ontario)
Badger, one of Franklin's classmates, uses crutches which attach
to her forearm. Other books in the series may also include this character.
WHERE'S CHIMPY?
Berniece Rabe/Diane Schmidt
Albert Whitman & Company (Morton Grove, Illinois)
A girl with Down's syndrome has misplaced her favourite comfort
object. Her father helps her find it... then she helps him find his
glasses.
ZOOM!
Robert Munsch/Michael Martchenko
Scholastic Canada Limited (Markham, Ontario) or
Scholastic Incorporated (Australia, New Zealand, UK, USA)
Lauretta walks with two canes & drives a power chair. When
she needs a replacement for this chair, she begs for an expensive sporty
model which will go faster. Quite an amusing story in view of Nora's
nickname "Hot Wheels".... ;-)
