Did you feel that way when Caspar Wineberger or Les Aspin showed up on the
tube
wearing military garb? For those of us whose memories have been atrophied by
time, I think the constitution calls for the government to be run essentially
by civilians. I, for one, am not insulted when the Sec/Def (whoever he might
be) wears an A-2 jacket, a hard hat, or any other military gear when he's
aboard a military aircraft or vessel, any more than I am insulted when the
IC
(whoever he might be) salutes any military member. I expect it of the CIC if
for no other reason than it is a courtesy he OUGHT to extend to the military
people serving him. He couldn't fail to do that without displaying disrespect
inappropriate for his office.
