Actually, that's backward. If you have Word97 and save the file
in Word95 format, it would save it in Revisable Form Text (RFT)
instead, which Word95 couldn't read.
This summer MS released a fix, and then released a Service
Release for Office97 that fixed this problem. The fixes can be
downloaded from their web site.
I have several programs that will work with Excel95 or Excel97
but not the other one--problems with changes in the macro
language. Also, Access97 isn't compatible with 95.
Still, I have to say that Excel97 seems better and easier to use
than any alternative spreadsheet. For word processing, WP 5.1+ is
just fine.
BTW, I did a little check: I measured the WP5.1+ screen on a 15
inch monitor. The 24 useable lines were 13 7/8 inches or 14
inches. (Probably 13 15/16 inches).
Then I tried measuring the useable area of a windows screen: Not
the top blue bar, or the menu bar, or the tool bar. Not the area
at the bottom that shows the information (the equivalent of the
25th line). Not the scroll bar at the bottom. Not the border on
either side, nor the scroll bar on the left. Not the area of the
margin that it insists on showing (I use 120% magnification in
WP 8, to minimize that). And not the system taskbar and tray
(though that can be hidden).
What is left is about 12.5 inches. In other words, you have to
get a 17 inch monitor for Win95 applications to have THE SAME
screen size as DOS. So much for Billy G. and his electric
operating system.
