I enjoyed your piece on equipment needed to keep safe while riding or
walking. Very clever. Though it was intended to show how laws can become
ridiculous, if we can stay with just the helmet, I believe that there are
time when it can be dicarded. There is this belief that wearing a helmet
makes one invincible to head injury and not wearing one will result in being
involved in an accident. Learning about road safety, being a more defensive
driver on a bike or in a car would reduce accidents way more then wearing
helmets. For years people road bikes without helmets and it took until the
80s and 90s for helmet companies to cash in on this politically correct
device. Has head injuries been reduced dramatically since then? For any State
or province to make it mandetory for the sake of being politically correct is
wrong. Helmets are believed to be 100% in stopping head injuries, wrong
again. They are just the quick fix.
