Hi, John. JT> PE> First of all there's a major issue, I won't have ANY fidonet echos as JT> PE> fidonet as soon as I get the unix stuff working. Are you planning on JT> PE> collecting comp.locuser.tml from me? JT> FM> Er, no. I don't think so. Huh? JT> FM> How do I get that? I suppose that means, how do I get internet JT> FM> newsgroups. Is that what they're called? JT> Once paul is set up, I will probably be setting up gating software here to JT> get packets from paul. I don't know if it's going to work though, but if JT> it JT> does work, all my users/points will access internet mail/newsgroups exactly JT> the JT> same as fido. Except the names of the echos will be different. Ah, that will be good. So basically I'll never need to call Paul again. JT> FM> The question was, if I write/reply to one of your points as JT> FM> 3:711/934.xx (because they haven't yet cut over) through John's JT> system, JT> FM> do they get the mail? Echomail? Netmail? JT> The only echomail between here and paul (alive) is locuser & locsysop. JT> Any JT> netmail you send to 3:711/934.x can be sent via here. It *will* get to JT> paul JT> providing he is still set up for fido, won't be for much longer though. Oh? What about his points (say, Bob Lawrence) who want to call Paul to get the internet news groups? That will be fido won't it? JT> PE> You can have this setup for maybe another week or so (this Linux stuff JT> PE> is a pain in the arse, last night I spent 4 hours attempting to JT> recompile JT> PE> the kernel to include PPP and I still haven't been successful!). JT> Getting JT> PE> those echos from John means there's an extra delay because you're JT> going JT> PE> via an extra system. JT> FM> Fuck, how do normal people get it to work then! JT> With great difficulty! :-) JT> FM> Or, don't normal people use Linux? JT> It depends on how you define "normal". :-) Er, Paul? :-) JT> FM> It's a Unix variant, isn't it? I guess not a lot would want to. JT> Only thing stopping me is lack of software, but this situation is JT> improving. AAMOI why do *you* want to go the Unix route? JT> PE> Yes, that will cover everything except people posting into AUST_AVTECH JT> etc JT> PE> from here, but I think people will stop doing that and start posting JT> in JT> PE> LOCUSER instead, e.g. Brenton wrote a message in AUST_AVTECH and I JT> replied JT> PE> to it in LOCUSER. JT> FM> Hmmm, so locuser/locsysop gets to and from John, but AvTech (and JT> FM> others? which?) doesn't? JT> AUST_AVTECH mail does come from paul, but is not processed. Moot point JT> now JT> as I haven't had any avtech traffic from paul for a while. It was active JT> (albeit quiet) for a short while, but dead now. In the packet containing this message from you were several AvTech messages. Bob & Brenton spring to mind. [later] Oops, I lied. Those messages were in Locsysop. OK, so AvTech escapes from Paul. What my question is, if I reply to one of those messages from Bob, via your system, does the reply get back to Paul and hence to Bob? [later] And having now seen that they weren't AvTech, I guess I've answered my own question. To talk to a Paul-point, use LocSysop or LocUser. Cross-post to AvTech if you want the message to have a wider audience. But the Paul-point will never see any replies to it in there.
