fwiw: The W2K here didn't see both CD burners, then it did, now
it only sees one of them. 

I have no good hypothesis as to why but I suspect that it was
the install/uninstall of various 'players' that grunged the
registry to not see both CD burners. The areas the players
reset for themselves are the same areas W2K uses to tell other
software what is available (hardware). 

I've tried editing the registry manually, removing all software
and hardware info and rebooting, physically removing the CD
burners then reinstalling them using control panel. Nothing
will bring back the other CD burner (so far). 

I am supposed to have the OS CDs sometime soon and may try a
complete reinstall of W2K and see what that can do for me. The
burner that cannot be 'seen' is the faster/newer one and I'm
very disappointed by all this trouble.
