Well, I've sort of got further.  I found the place that I think was meant
to fix up my address, but it didn't appear to do so (awaiting
verification). News I got to the point where I could actually read the
newsgroups on my own system (which of course were all empty).  However, I
get a message "inndstart cant start Address already in use" or
somesuch when I start it.

I now have zillions (well, half a dozen anyway) of "internet
friends" and am asking them for technical advice.  I am also asking
for the RFC which governs UUCP.  BFN.  Paul.
