Hello James!
Replying to a message of James Laine to All:
JL> What I would like to know JL> is..
JL> What opperating system is the Watcom C++ compiler designed for? Dos?
JL> OS/2? Unix?
If I understand your question correctly, what you want to know is what
target platforms it is intended for. If that is you question, then the
answer is that it will write programs for DOS, including some of the
DOS-Extender programs like PharLap, Windows 3.1, Windows NT, OS/2, and one
of the beta versions of Windows 95. Beware, though, the OS/2 target
programs are only compatible with OS/2 up to version 2.1, NOT WARP!
JL> Is Watcom C++ a command-line compiler, or does it include an
JL> integrated editor?
Watcom C++ includes only a command-line compiler if you're using it in
DOS, but it has an IDE for both the Windows and OS/2 environment. The
Windows host comes with Visual Programmer, which allows you to graphically
design the user interface, as well as its own editor for Windows. In the
OS/2 environment you can use the Watcom editor or the OS/2 editor, and it
also includes a dialog editor, but no menu editor, which is available in
the Windows version.
JL> Can I use the Watcom C++ compiler in OS/2's PM-Shell? That is, is it
JL> a PM application, or does it include an OS/2 PM interface?
The compiler in OS/2 and in Windows can be run from the IDE, which
also allows you to browse the object hierarchy, debug, and sample the
application, as well as run it right from the IDE.
JL> What type of manuals does Watcom C++ come with? Indroductory manuals
JL> (for the C novice)? Library reference manuals (for easy access to
JL> library function details)? Quick reference charts (for reminders
JL> about easily forgotten syntax)?
For this you should contact Watcom, since I got the academic version,
which is about 25% of the retail version, but included no manuals.
Bye, James!
