This is certainly not what goes on over here.  Only the most critical mass
market applications are written directly to the API, since they might
warrant the investment.  The vast majority of programs written are for
in-house use or for vertical market resale, and these all tend to be done
using application frameworks.  This cost and time advantage is the same
reason that rapid application development has caught on so well here, using
tools such as Borland's Delphi and Microsoft's Visual BASIC.
