Team officials hope to bring a party atmosphere to Turner Field.
To that end, they have started surveying the players for their favorite
songs, which will be broadcast over the public-address system when a
player, say, comes to bat or enters the game from the bullpen.
"When I come to the plate?" asked pitcher Greg Maddux, a little
befuddled by the whole idea. "How about funeral music? Or maybe, 'Take
It Easy On Me.' "
Some of the other selections were "Enter Sandman," a Metallica song
favored by second baseman Mark Lemke; "Set It Off" by reliever Pedro
Borbon; "Swing," a Spanish song that doesn't seem appropriate for
weak-hitting shortstop Rafael Belliard; and "Tootsie Roll," the choice
of outfielder David Justice.
Many of the players haven't made up their minds.
"It's got to be heavy metal," catcher Javy Lopez said, "so I can rock
the house."
"I don't know," outfielder Jermaine Dye said. "Let me think about that.
I really don't have a favorite song right now."
Third baseman Chipper Jones also was uncertain, though Justice chipped
in with a suggestion: "Play That Funky Music, White Boy."
