In early '46 while I was with the 475th Fighter Group, we had gotten in a
bunch of new pilots whose experience was in SE fighters. Many were concerned
about the potential loss of an engine on take-off and the effect this would
have on controllability of the aircraft. Compunding this was the fact that
many or most of our P38L's had developed a wrinkle on the leading edge of the
left wing outbord of the left engine. A "famous" Lockheed test pilot and tech
rep came in (I think it was Tony LaVier) and demonstrated the full range of
capabilities of the P-38L including slow roll on TO while shutting down the
engine on the side being rolled into. Great confidence builder since most
take-offs were with two 265 gallon external tanks for long range reccon of
Soviet shipping out of Manchuria carrying dismantled Japanese arms factories.
