When I was at B-29 school at Amarillo in '45, the Italians were by then 
"co-belligerents" and worked in the base laundry and other service type jobs. 
THey wore US uniforms with a shoulder patch that said "co-belligerent." They 
ate very well and seemed to be enjoying themselves.
