While I don't disagree with what you said about it being better regarded if
they don't copy it, I'm still in favor of a unified consistent UI. I just
don't like the direction Microsoft seems to be taking because I believe
their vision has been blurred by inexperience.

Now you are changing your tune. No competition is prevented or even
limited in your description. In fact, given your asserted personal
preferences competitors would be better regarded by you if they didn't try
to copy Microsoft innovations in the ribbon UI. It might even be good for
folks like the openoffice guys to try something other than a clone of the
Microsoft Office UI.

You think the ribbon restriction that says direct office competitors can't
use it is not anticompetitive, sort of like if Apple said everyone but MS
can use the trashcan, didn't MS sue over that look and feel thing claiming
it was anticompetitive? Funny how the tables turn and suddenly MS sees it
in
a different light, no?
I like words with my icons since it's replacing File/Edit/View which is a
word based menu.

Are you saying that all Office 2007 competitors disappeared by some
magical means? I still see people talking about them. Is this some other
reality to which you refer?
As your contrived screen shot, in your attempts to be deceptive you
already found the way to grow the toolbar size so you could use the same
mechanism to shrink it. It's the same as present in earlier versions of
IE.
I think you are lying to yourself with your own car analogy.

>> How does IE changing the menus prevent competition?
The ribbon thing prevents competition. The IE thing is just annoying.
>> Why do you claim it doesn't make things better? It saves space
>> allowing for more
No it doesn't. It sucks up space and cramps the tabs so you can't even
read
the titles. See attached, THAT is why I want to turn it off, I want that
space back for tabs. Also in the attached image, compare the size of
File/Edit/View to the Home/Feeds/Print menu and tell me which uses more
space.

But that's the point, I'm not change adverse, I don't care if they move
the
CD player, I do care if they move the drivers seat to the right side
though.. There are some things that should not change in order to
provide
consistency so users don't have to fumble around trying to learn how to
use
a computer all over again or learning how to drive all over again.
File/Edit/View is one such thing, it is definitely not some "small
change",
it's the gas, brake, and steering wheel.
