Hello, Paul.
PW> I could also use the drivers ('specially dos ones) for a trio of
PW> wheelmice I got. One is a marked as a m$ intellimouse serial or ps/2
PW> compatible, part# 68574 fcc-id# c3kkzb1 and has a ps/2 connector
I just did some experiments with a "saved" serial/ps2 compatible
MSIntellimouse Part 96483, fcc 3ckzb2. I've no dongle handy, so can't
check it on the Win3.x box with serial mouse port, but I'd expect at
least std mouse functions would work with the MS mouse driver for DOS.
PW> Second is a genius scrollmouse, fcc-id# fsugmzfv.
I dunno about their scrollmouse, but I've seen genius serial mouses work
just fine with the MS mouse driver. Their driver is like MS DOS driver
- it finds which serial port the mouse is on, so no need to put in a
switch to the DOS command to tell it what port.
PW> Last (and the best) is a logitech optical mouse, model m-bj58
PW> w/ a usb connector and a usb-ps/2 adapter. Again it's a scroll/wheel
PW> mouse.
I dunno about those from Logitech, but I just tested a "no name" optical
mouse with Win98fe here, and it works off the same driver as the
intellimouse. Aamof, it is still connected, and I'm about to use it to
upload qwk packet with this message.
PW> The m$ and genius work but only as regular mice on the laptop since
PW> I don't have the right drivers to setup the wheel part.
On Win98fe here, the Intellimouse seems to be plug and play compatible
with std MS PS2 mouse. I got no special driver sw - just plugged it
in and booted, and it worked. Afaict either no special driver is needed
or Windows figures it out. What I've seen is that the wheel part doesn't
work with all software. Wheel works with Win98fe Wordpad, Notepad, OLEx,
and MSIE ver 5, Office97, and etc. Doesn't work with Edit, or, more
interesting, it doesn't work with MSWorks ver 4.5 for Win95, dated in
1997. Based on that, I'd expect the wheel might well not work with any
DOS-based programs.
PW The logitech
PW> otoh worked just fine as a usb wheelmouse w/ the default driver in
PW> 98fe. I don't know abt how it'll do w/ the usb-ps/2 adapter as one of
PW> the pins was bent over double and I haven't gotten it straightened
PW> out yet. (being real careful w/ it. it's a solid pin not hollow so
PW> it's stronger but to much flexing is still bad)
Then I'd expect it will work with the MS PS2 Intellimouse type driver
also.
Good luck.
