| subject: | OS/2 C++ Programming? |
In a message dated 11-19-98, Wayne Steele said to All about "OS/2 C++ Programming?" Hi Wayne, WS>I wouldn't have a clue what I need for programming C++ for WS>OS/2 but I'm willing to learn somehow... Do you already know C++? WS>I have a source code for a BBS package and I need a WS>compiler for it... Is there any FREEWARE or SHAREWARE WS>compilers around? There is a freeware compiler called EMX. Worth every penny. It is a reasonably good compiler, but has no add-on tools as such and the documentation sucks. WS>If not does Watcom 10.x or 11.x series compile OS/2 executables? Yes. The Watcom compilers are top notch and they include support for both 16-bit and 32-bit OS/2. You might care to download a more recent release of the OS/2 Developer's Toolkit, as the version supplied with the Watcom compilers is for OS/2 2.1. [It will still work, but it won't be complete for "Warp" releases of OS/2.] Assuming you don't already know C/C++ ... Note that Watcom's documentation is not for the learner. You would be well advised to buy a book on the C language and library. [Avoid anything by Herbert Schildt.] There is little definitive literature on ANSI C++ yet, as the standard is too new. The most definitive works would be "The C++ Annotated Reference Manual" (or ARM), by Stroustrup & Ellis, and "The C++ Programming Language" [3rd edition], by Stroustrup. These deviate from the ANSI standard, as do most compilers, but the differences are mostly esoteric.
