Did a recent google search on support for Israel. Many sources,
many in Israel. Did it after reading that article I cited as
showing American Jews and Arabs generally agree on how the
Israli/Palestinian problems should be solved.
The general consensus was that before LBJ support for Isreal was
tepid in the US govt. With JFK it started to increase, but LBJ
was the real mover on that. Haretz interviewed a former envoy to
the US on the subject, and he rated LBJ as the best supporter of
Isreal of any president. He did so because not only was LBJ a
great supporter, but he supported Israel against a lot of
political opposition.
Conservatives have been the long time opposition to Israel, and
that turned around mainly with the Religious right. However,
those who trumpet the support seem to forget, the extreme
religious right supports Israel mostly because they believe this
will lead to the conversion of most Jews, and the remainder will
die. Part of their last days philosophy.
Of all the presidents, Eisenhower was ranked low, much to my
surprise GHW Bush was ranked low. GW Bush has been ranked as
practically ignoring Israel. It used to be said, the road to
peace in the Middle East runs through Israel. It seems, to the
Bush administration, the road through Isreal leads nowhere.
No American politician of any significance offers any opposition
to Israel at all, or even fails to vigorously support Israel.
The realistic politicians recognize that some of Israel's
problems are due to some of their own mistakes. Many Israelis
feel the occupation of the Palestinian areas was one big
mistake. It has bled the Isreali military and the Israeli
treasury. Many blame the inability of the Israeli militiary to
win in the Lebanon incursion on that bleeding.
In the real world the demcratic party is far more Israeli's hope
than the Republican party ever was or is likely to be.
