JW> In real estate a room needs both a closet and a window large enough
JW> to get through in case of a fire to be called a bedroom. Otherwise
JW> it's a den, home office or hobby room.
That is true here in the USA as well.
DS> When we lived in England, our house was lacking closets. I believe
DS> that to have been true of a lot of homes there. Folks used free
DS> standing closets (chifaroles?)
JW> I think the word you searching for is chiffonier. But a chiffonier
JW> is a high narrow chest of drawers or dresser. Also known in the
JW> furniture trade as a "highboy".
That is probably the word I wanted. We have one of those in our current
bedroom. We also have a very large walk in closet, I'd guess 10 foot by
6 foot.
JW> Portable closets are usually called
JW> wardrobes and armoires.
Armoires sounds like the type of thing they used for such bedrooms.
JW> A closet, like a pantry, is an architectural feature whereas a
JW> wardrobe or armoire, like a chest of drawers, is a piece of
JW> furniture.
Yep.
