See, here's where watching the movie (or reading the story) helps.  By
the time Kirk is seen in the movie being recruited into Starfleet, he
would have already been well beyond being a cadet in the prior
timeline where his father was not killed during his birth.

I grant that it is not entirely consistent.  Neither is the Enterprise
being able to travel from one side of the galaxy to the other in one
episode, and not being able to in another.  Whatever suited the plot.
