Jeremiah,
It doesn't really cost very much to get the hardware. I traded an
old Zenith 286 laptop I had here for the 10' dish, receiver and cables.
The only thing I had to buy was the 10' of 3" pipe and the cement to
hold it firm in the ground. The rest was time and perspiration.
I've heard of the older systems going for as little as $100-200,
and sometimes if you find the right person/place you can get the
equipment at NO COST. This is, of course, for a C-Band system
(low frequency) using a BUD, but for about the same price you can
get a NEW DSS/DBS system with the small dish. The only problem
there is, that I don't think there is much in the way of ITC
(in the clear) programming on the digital sats (mostly scrambled)
and therefore you would end up paying extra each month/year to
see the programs. There's still quite a bit ITC on C-Band.
And if you take the time to create a viewing list, it's quite
easy to get enjoyable programming.
Sincerely,
           Bruce - kb6lwn - ck1@pacbell.net
