  Hellllo Benjamin !!
Benjamin ‚crivait … Jean, dans: Air cooled VW, ce mois #03-01-97:
BK> First of all I thank you for replying to my mesage, I thought
My pleasure !! I had so much pleasure with my Beetle !!
BK> that it would go unanswered. Before I talk about my "popcorn poper" I'd
BK> like to compliment you on taking care of your bug and making such gook
BK> preformance decisions.
Thanks, but, you seem like I was: You like to "play" with mechanics...
BK> Ok, I have a 63 semi baja sedan. By this I mean that the rear
BK> fenders were fiberglass, the rear clip was removed and it had larger
BK> cheve wheeles in the rear. It is my first VW(infact my first car).
A REALY modified Volks was my dream !!
I liked the kits, as the VEEbird, or R.R. or Ford look alike bodies!
BK> bought it for $200 from a frind. I didn't even know haw to change the
BK> oil when I got started. Well I had to rebuld the 40hp engine because
BK> the guy before me had a stinger without a flap, N-E-Way I basicly had
   Explain a little more ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ ^^^^^^^
BK> barnicals growing in #3 cylinder. So to make a very long story short I
BK> learned my way around the thing and rebuld the motor. What I actualy
BK> did was install rebult heads, big bore PC,
Lucky you !!!! big bore !!
BK> a webber 30mm carb and a
BK> quiet pack exhaust. You can emagin my joy when I fianaly got it
BK> started. It has been quite a pain to tune.
Watch dwell angle, 31-32 degrees max.
And if you can "play" with the meetering jets, adjust their size
.055" .065" ... ... by the color of the exhaust....
If its light gray, drill a little larger .004-.005" more.
If it's black, too rich, put smaler jets, or with a soldering gun,
fill the holes and drill back smaler.
If the exhaust color is brown, PERFECT !!
I mean the color deposits inside the pipe/pipes or glass pack...
BK> This is mainly because the
BK> intake manafold is freezing up bigtime.
Wow !! Can YOU imagine, here, where there is SNOW !!!! ??
But my 2 bbl manifold had the little tube, runing just under
the carb, and I made the air filters ( in winter ) suck the warm air,
  getting out under the cylinders...
BK> The reason for that is that the
BK> preheater tubes cannot be conected to the header, they don't line up.
  Can't you force them a little ?
BK> So what I'm thinking of doing is add an external oil cooler and route
BK> the lines around the intake manafold to produce enough heat to, well do
BK> it's thing. So that is basicly where I am right naw with my car. Also
BK> I'm helping my frind with his cal bug. It started as a '68 but the 1641
BK> would not pass smog so we recently put the body on a '65 pan, that was
BK> interesting. But whole we had the body off we put the 1835 out of his
BK> baja on the pan because if we are having a socalled '65 we can put any
BK> engine we want. Well right now he has to get a wireing harnace, but
BK> otherwise it is together.
   VERY interresting !
BK> By the way my bug still has the vacume distributer and the
BK> whole electral system is still 6v.
 6V ! Wow good old times ! I owned a '65 Beetle for around 2 years.
BK> This still dosent keep me from
BK> squealing the tires once in a while, something my frinds 1600 2brl
BK> weberstreet bug can not do!
Yes, he should, but the driver makes a difference.
Did I tell you, when I was "racing" with the Datsuns and Toyotas,
I shifted so fast, I did not remove the foot from the accelarator ?
So the tires squeaeaeaealed in first ( that's sure ) and in 2nd !
BK> By the way I'm 16 and I guess I
BK> have lots of time to tinker with my bucket and drop in a 1776 someday.
BK> Please write back if posable, Thanks.
  Now I know why it's your FIRST !! |-)
By the way, try to find an electronic magneto !! VERY good for
a clean burn in the cylinders, and when you rev up +6000 RPM, the
sparks get STRONGER, not weaker like with coils !!
  And good to pass smog...
