AFAIK, Maximus requires a file called MSGTMP##.$$$, where "##" represents the 
node number.  You'd have to configure an external editor to use this file 
naming scheme or (possibly) rename the file in a batch.  For example, if I 
log into my local node and post, the filename created is MSGTMP02.$$$.  Max 
has no problem importing the message after saving.  Maybe someone else in 
this echo can help you with IceEdit.

Hmmm... I thought... well, I tried it from remote some time ago as an editor 
for batch files, etc.  It worked in that environment (no DoorWay) but I've 
never set it up as an external message editor.
