From what I understand, the approved route included a 1,000 foot minimum
altitude. It should be obvious that if the aircraft was above its approved
altitude, there would have been no accident even if it was off-course.
Barring
altimeter malfunction, I can see how somebody might conclude that there was a
violation.

This may well be the way you feel about it right now, but I'd bet that a lot
of
people who volunteered for overseas tours would disagree with you. Not only
that, but I never talked with anybody who had been stationed at Aviano who
thought it was tough duty.

I believe that the Italian Government has pretty much supported us in our
joint
international affairs since the end of WWII. If I'm not mistaken, they even
sent some troops into Somalia when we were there.

We may not like it, but we seem to be stuck with the problems of the biggest
and richest nation in the world. If you think sticking your head in the sand
will solve our problems of being a world leader, remember which part stays
exposed when your head is in the ground. Generally, it ends up being kicked.
IMHO, better we should stay involved and, hopefully, be able to influence
events to suit ourselves.

I can agree with you there. I was present during part of 44 and 45 and, as I
recall, most of those I came into contact with were glad to see us and happy
to
have us help them get their country back from the Fascists and Germans.
