I always liked running a low-powered WM like fvwm or twm and keeping a
couple of running log files open in xterms. No need for a full-blown WM,
though.
At one point in my career, back when hardware was expensive, I remember my
accounting manager running OpenGL screen savers on all of the Windows 2000
servers - and wondering what was hogging the CPU!
