GS> Not sure if this is topical or not, but what the heck...
GS> The other day I went to see Waterworld and I'm quite thankful I
GS>waited to see it at a discount theatre. The hero of the story
GS>is a mutant who has this little set of gills behind his ears.
GS> Now what I'm trying to figure out is, how can a set of gills that
GS>are about the right size for a large trout serve a 180-lb man?
GS>Seems to me that something much larger would be in order, if you
GS>want to be realistic.
GS> Does anybody know if there is research going on to make artificial
lls?
The USNavy funded artifical gill research in the 60's nd 70's and made
little progress, main reason was the limited transfer rate across the
manmand semiperminable membrane. The gills" developed were quite large
as a result.
However, a vast array of other phisological problems arose, blood
transfer protocols, stray proteins and many other problems.
Pardon my spelling, my computer is acting up today.....
