Rod, at 09:30 on Mar 15 1996, you wrote to Bill Grimsley... PE> What does "Jawohl" mean? RS> Dont ask me, ask the resident krauts. Sort of yes sir. BG> Nope. RS> We'll see. This wasn't an attempt at one-upmanship or anything like that, Rod. Just clarifying the point, that's all. I happen to find foreign languages quite interesting, in case you hadn't noticed. BG> Yes sir is "Jawohl, mein herr". "Jawohl" just means yes, and "Ja" BG> is the abbreviated form, like our Yeah. So lach mich um arsch. :) RS> I meant in the context of the whole bit, RS> tho he certainly asked about just that word. Jawohl is actually quite a formal word, and is hardly ever used in normal street German. Unlike Ja (yeah, yair etc), just like here really. BTW, I notice that you didn't ask for a translation of that other phrase. although I'll bet that Dieter knows exactly what it means. :) Regards, Bill --- Msgedsq/2 3.20* Origin: Logan City, SEQ (3:640/305.9) SEEN-BY: 640/305 711/934 |
