I suppose that depends on ones lifestyle, doesn't it?
I live out in the country, close enough to power though. I need power
for a well, and other uses, and I don't see enough solar cells and
battery backup to meet the average needs of say 15KWH/day as
affordable.
Maybe I'm wrong. And, any comments as to the economic basis for
costing a solar-cell electric system is appreciated.
IW>Solar will NOT economically power the typical energy hogging

You got that right. But I like refrigerators, and ovens, and
dishwashers, and clothes washers, and etc... [grin]
TH>Despite advancements, they are still way too expensive.
IW>Compared to what?
Compared to paying for it by the watt/hour.
IW>How about compared to the actual cost grid power, including cleaning
IW>up the ground, air and water after coal-fired or nuke plants?
These costs are unavoidable regardless, since the plants have already
been built. Most of these costs will be borne by the utility user.
IW>Solar electric systems are working for thousands and thousands of

I think that's great.
IW>It's fun to dream of a time when they will be really cheap, but I

Well, I guess the good news is that car prices will continue to go
up, and solar technology costs will continue to go down.
Ian, don't get me wrong. I'm a strong advocate of solar and alternate
energy. Hey, I have a 140-gal batch water heater on the roof. I have
it, because it am matter of economics. For my families lifestyle and
our situation the $200 cost for the project has already paid for
itself in the first two years of operation.
Solar cells don't have that kind of payback ratio. It's not even ten
years, yet. I'm sure that will happen, though. And I look forward to
it. Really...
