subject: OS/2 C++ Programming?

Hi David,

 WS> I wouldn't have a clue what I need for programming C++ for
 WS> OS/2 but I'm willing to learn somehow...

 DN> Do you already know C++?

Nope:)... I have't programmed in years... The last programming I done was
on a Texas Instruments 99/4a:)

 WS> I have a source code for a BBS package and I needa
 WS> compiler for it... Is there any FREEWARE or SHAREWARE
 WS> compilers around?

 DN> There is a freeware compiler called EMX. Worth every penny. It isa
 DN> reasonably good compiler, but has no add-on tools as such and the
 DN> documentation sucks.

Your about the third person to recommend that... I'm currently downloading
it now from the OS/2 Super site...

 WS> If not does Watcom 10.x or 11.x series compile OS/2 executables?

 DN> Yes.

 DN> The Watcom compilers are top notch and they include support for
 DN> both 16-bit and 32-bit OS/2.

I'll keep an eye open for a copy forsale somewhere... I might post a
message in the for sale/wanted echo...

 DN> You might care to download a more recent release of the OS/2
 DN> Developer's Toolkit, as the version supplied with the Watcom
 DN> compilers is for OS/2 2.1.

So where will I find this?

 DN> [It will still work, but it won't be complete for "Warp" releases
 DN> of OS/2.]

Ah so I need the update then...

 DN> Assuming you don't already know C/C++ ...

Yep that's me:)

 DN> Note that Watcom's documentation is not for the learner. You would
 DN> be well advised to buy a book on the C language and library. [Avoid
 DN> anything by Herbert Schildt.]

I have a HTML guide to learning C++ in 21 days... I guess this will give me
a start...

 DN> There is little definitive literature on ANSI C++ yet, as the
 DN> standard is too new. The most definitive works would be "The C++
 DN> Annotated Reference Manual" (or ARM), by Stroustrup & Ellis, and
 DN> "The C++ Programming Language" [3rd edition], by Stroustrup.
 DN> These deviate from the ANSI standard, as do most compilers, but
 DN> the differences are mostly esoteric.

OK thanks... I've noted these and will have a look around the net for
things... Thank you for your reply muchlyh appreciated...
