Your definition sums it up.
For the longest time I've maintained that "A weed is a plant that
is growing where it is not wanted".
To this end, I have friends with JUNGLES for gardens, and their
six cats just love it. I enjoy the sprinklings of bright yellow
dandelions across the parks, the maintenance staff hate them.
If one were weeding mechanically, by touch, one method would be
to have a tactile descriptor for each wanted plant, and then yank
out the other plants.
Suppose, therefore, two rows of peas, with a string-line running
along the rows near to ground level. A plant growing directly
under the string would probably be the result of a planted pea
seed; anything between the string and the next parallel string is
a weed.
Likewise one could have a gardener come in and put twist-ties
around the plants that look kosher, and then we could remove
those plants that did not have twist-ties.
In a larger plot, say a 20-foot square strawberry patch, anything
inside the tactile border (string? hose? planks?) that didn't
feel like a strawberry creeper or strawberry leaf could be yanked
out.
Of course, in deference to those poor real plants that were
mistakenly yanked out as weeds, and we all do that from time to
time, we should give them a heroes burial in the compost pile,
thereby offering their souls a second chance in next year's
garden!
I hope this helps.
