Most ISP's are commercial, so we use .co.uk, and for academic sites (equivalent of .edu in America) we have .ac.uk as the end of the domain name. I Australia, they use .au and have the American-style .edu, .gov, .com, etc., ahead, giving .edu.au, .gov.au, .com.au, etc. See Wayne Steele's address in his signature block for an example.
