As an addendum to the above, I've also found that, for those interested in
programming, Microsoft Access (in the Office suite) uses basic to set up and
implement some of the real world activities and projects in our program, and
FoxPro offers the option of programming as opposed to drag and drop set-up
options. It also offers the benefit of being a way to pick up really useful
computer skills, and can actually be used to construct applications which are
both portable and easy for even younger children to use.
