| subject: | OS/2 C++ Programming? |
On Thursday, 98/12/03, Wayne Steele wrote to David Noon about "OS/2 C++ Programming?" as follows: Hi Wayne, WS> DN> There is a major leap in technology from C to C++. Your approach WS> DN> to programming in C++ is somewhat different from that of WS> DN> programming in C; not all that much different, but enough to WS> DN> intimidate many. WS> WS> So is this EMS c or C++? Yes. All C++ compilers I have seen, and they are many, contain support for C as well. EMX falls into this category. WS> Ah that's alright then... But I guess C++ is C++... That is rather optimistic, I'm afraid. The C++ grammar supported by EMX is behind that supported by Watcom 11.x, very roughly the same as that supported by Watcom 10.x and well ahead of that supported by IBM Visual Age C++. One of the long standing bugbears of C++ is that every compiler vendor had their own ideas as to what contituted the C++ language. This is also a tradition inherited from C. WS> I would imagine you could get third party addons anyway... Get the source code, so that you can compile it for whatever compiler you are using. It is never really safe to link a library compiled by one vendor's compiler into an executable compiled by another vendor's compiler.
