I've seen a lot of messages here about the definition of prog. rock bands,
and the one real standout American group that comes to my mind would have to
be Kansas. Some may disagree as to their status as prog, but you gotta admit
that their music fits the criteria I've sen given here; time sig. and key
modulations abound, and while their lyrics aren't as 'spacey' as, say, Yes's,
the instrumental side of their music has much to offer the musician's ear.
And that, in my opinion, is the audience really targeted by prog bands; the
musically literate. As opposed to those bands (Foghat comes to mind) who play
to the musically illiterate.
Anyway, I just dragged out an old tape I have of Kansas' "Masque" album, and
really grooved on "Borne on Wings of Steel", and I thought,"Hey, I wonder if
any of those prog-freeks out there would agree with me about Kansas?
Y'
Y'all have a good-un!
