Sure, Blake. I'm not in the habit of explaining things that seem
obvious to me, but will usually do so on request, especially when the
request comes from such a nice guy.
Most active hams have a computer in the shack. Many, like me, have
several. In such a case, it becomes desirable to be able to share
resources between computers, so that they needn't duplicate each other's
functionality. FloppyNet is one way to move files around, but it's slow
and laborious. A null modem cable is faster and simpler, but it still
only moves files around and it ties up a serial port. With a Local Area
Network, on the other hand, all system resources can be shared between
computers. It doesn't matter which box has a given file, printer,
scanner, or modem, because they all can share. One case where this has
become essential technology is in a multi-multi contest station. With
the logging computers linked in a LAN, operators can see where the "rare
one" just worked is needed and hand him off for additional multipliers.
But even those of us who are less competitive can still use a LAN to
spend less of our lives swapping cables or floppies. Does every ham
need network cards? Probably not. But any techie can see that they
have big advantages over the alternatives, and plenty of hams are using
them.
I hope that you find this responsive. I was kinda surprised that you
balked at this, but not the hard drives. But then, maybe every ham does
need a hard drive... :)
BB>Thanks in advance for your cooperation.
You're welcome, my pleasure.
