DD>> We can tell when we are dialling a cell phone as they all DD>> have the same area code (04). DS> Here there are many area codes, each three digits. I am not DS> certain DS> whether or not any area codes have both land line and cell phones DS> in DS> them, or whether each area code has only one type of phone. That DS> said, I don't think that most folks would have any way of knowing DS> for sure whether or not a particular phone number is land line or DS> cell DS> phone unless they had called that number and knew the receiving DS> party. DS> It is an interesting difference. In my part of New York, everything is lumped under one are code... 518. To most people it would be impossible to tell the difference between a cell or landline phone call unless they've been around for awhile. There used to be a sort of numbering scheme for the exchanges, where anything starting with 2 (i.e. 273-xxxx) was from Renssalaer county, anything starting with 3 Schenectady county, anything starting with a 4 was from Albany county. Anybody who had to deal with a customer base from around the entire NY Capital District could not only tell what county in the region it was coming from, but what part of the county. Cell phones can screw that up for people who never got used to the old scheme. Myself, I know right away if it's a cell phone call if it doesn't have any of the exchanges I grew to know over the years. Also... my caller ID here now displays the incoming number and "WIRELESS CALLER" when there is an incoming cell call. I believe NYC has seperate area codes for cell phones, but I'm not sure. When I was growing up NYC only had one area code, when I was leaving NYC it had two, now it has several.
