JAM is a local storage format... fidonet does NOT care about local storage... 
it could be a flat text file or a DBIII database file... SOT/EOT is not
necessary... it is only someone's (yes i know who) way of determining the
start and end of the user text. i see no problems with the current methods
other than lazy programmers who can't work up intelligent code to determine
it one way or the other.
