I assume you're taiking Audio recording here. This is not MIDI. Just
to clear that up.....

Chuck the SB card. The quality is little better than a 4-track
cassette deck. The MIDI port is also often troublesome.

I would suggest a MIDIMan DMan card, on a budget, or a CardD+ if you
are serious. CardD+ is Audio only....no MIDI. The Dman has a MIDI port
(2???), but I don't know if it's true MPU401 compatible.

The new rash of multi-track cards _seem_ wonderful, but I would wait a
while to let the dust settle (and dust is a POLITE way of putting
it).

If you MUST have multi-track input at present, then use ADAT, and fly
the tracks in for editing to the PC via a digital input on your
soundcard (again we're talking pro here)

You will also need heaps of backup. Your hard drive will give you
about 90 minutes of CD quality recording at 10 tracks mono. Then what?
So. You need either a Syquest or other removable hard disk backup
system, or you can go for digital tape. The second is heaps cheaper,
but very slow (backup overnight). Each song project could easily run
to 100Mb+.

What software were you planning on using....for
recording/mixing....for editing?

You will also need good monitor speakers, headphones, and a mixer and
microphones.
