Season's Greetings Ralf,
RZ> today it's raining cats and dogs, good time to solve your quiz and
RZ> refreshing the mind.
-------------------------------
Ha,ha,ha, you must live in Vancouver! Whatever you do, don't step
in a poodle I like your answers, but you didn't mention "where" these
marks are usually located, ie: what type of waters. Kinda important to
know for "real" seamanship :^)
AH> i) FlG
RZ> Light, single flashing green
That's what it is. I figure it's a porthand lateral marker found in
channels and harbours.
------------------------
AH> ii) GP FL(3) 12s 34Feet 13M (U)
RZ> GP: don't know, guessing Group
RZ> FL(3) 12s 34Feet 13M (U)
RZ> Light, group flashing repeating a group of three flashes,
RZ> period 12s, elevation of light 34Feet above chart datum, range 13
RZ> nautical miles, unwatched light with no standby or emergency
RZ> arrangements
Got that one too. I didn't think anyone would get the "unwatched"
part :^) With three flashes, I would consider it a fixed East Cardinal
marker indicating safe or deep water to the east of it. Also, the
elevation would be from "mean high water" as opposed to chart datum which
is sounded at "mean lower low water".
---------------------------
AH> iii) Mo(A) 6s
RZ> Light, morse code A, period 6s
Yup. It's a lateral system fairway marker found in channels or
landfalls. Colours are red & white, with a white light flashing "alpha"
(dot/dash) indicating navigable waters surrounds it.
-------------------------------
AH> iv) (VQ(6)+LF1) 10s
RZ> (VQ(6)+LFl) 10s
RZ> Light, group of 6 flashes very quick + long flash 2s or longer, together
RZ> period 10s
Yup. I don't know what you mean by "together periods" though... I
call them "separation periods". That is, the time space inbetween the
groups. This one is a South Cardinal marker with the same location
schematics as the East marker except south instead of east.
--------------------------------------
AH> v) Oc (2) 20s
RZ> Light, group of 2 occultings, period 20s
RZ> Found at INT1 Chart, International Hydrographic Organization, Monaco.
Hmmm, you got the description spot on, but I must confess I don't know
anything else about it's name, location, nor useage.
-------------------------------
RZ> Do you have another one?
okay, how about:
a) Iso 2s
b) Al
and for some non-lights, what are these cans (some Canadians might
have trouble with these ones :^)
ca) white with red top, no number
cb) white with black top, no number
Since we're having fun with this, I'll post other quiz q's over the
weekend to help everyone out in case it's still raining :^) BTW, none of
what I tap is absolute gospel - in otherwords, I don't hold a captain's
license, so please feel free to correct me if there's any error :^)
Cheers,
