That's right: no reason to format the disk. Obvioulsy, "formatting
the disk" won't help if the virus has "deleted" files. Obviously,
"formatting the disk" won't help if the virus has "renamed" files.
So far, in your scenarios, "formatting the disk" hasn't helped at
all.

Indeed, if the virus has "deleted your files" installing them again
(not "formatting the disk") would be a pretty good idea.
