subject: computer upgrade

Well the upgrade didn't happen today, they didn't have the
hard disk, and that was the final nail in the coffin.

So I'm planning on going for the Cyrix 686-100 instead of the
Pentium-120. BTW, the disk drive is Quantam.

Anyway, the upgrade is:

Cyrix 100 motherboard + CPU = $470
16 meg 72-pin SIMMs = $395
converter for existing SIMMs = $60
ET 4000 = $120
2 gig IDE = $495 [wakeup Frank!!!]

They are happy to refund the SIMM converter if it isn't suitable.
I guess my response to SIMM converters not working would be to
buy some more RAM, return the converters.

BTW, with the phasing out of the SCSI, I am going to have an
interesting time getting the data on 1 gig SCSI which can only
be read on my VLBus motherboard, onto the 2 gig EIDE, which can
presumably only work on the new motherboard. I am planning to
stage it, by copying all the data from the small (500 + 420) IDEs
to the big (2 gig) IDE in the new machine, then copying the SCSI
data onto the small IDEs in the old machine, then back onto the
new machine.

Bit of a shambles, really. I am a bit worried about the new
motherboard. Once I nearly shorted the entire motherboard out
by placing it on the chassis.

I'll have to remember to do some backups one of these days too.

I'm a bit worried about the RAM too, I've looked through
AUST_TRADING, doesn't seem to be a large number of buyers.

I have:
1. 486-33 VLBus motherboard
2. Adaptec 2842
3. 16 meg in 4 meg 30-pin SIMMS [if sold real soon]
4. 4 meg in 1 meg 30-pin SIMMS

Number 3 is the biggest problem, because I haven't got all day to
get it right. I have to trade off the lack of enthusiasm in
AUST_TRADING with the fact that even at a sale of $335, I would be
replacing old 30-pin RAM with new 72-pin.

I am a bit worried about posting this stuff to people too, how are
they meant to know if the RAM works? Also there's the possibility
of me not packaging them properly or something. Better to have
someone with a car come over and install it, see it work, and then
leave. Maybe I should sell the whole motherboard intact.

BTW, any idea on the prices of new and second hand versions of (1)
and (2)? I have a price list (MS040496.PRN) but it doesn't include
those items.

BFN. Paul.
