Seeing as OS/2 also doesn't allow programs access to the video 'segment,'
you're in a bind, eh? :-)

What it seems you have to do, and I'm trying to figure it out myself, is
use the OS/2 VIO API. If you can get the documentation, functions to look
at include VioGetBuf and VioShowBuf - you can do your updating like
graphics are done - in the background - and then update the screen later.

However, I'm still trying to figure out exactly how to use them. :-/
