Homo, hominis is "man" in the sense of person. It is gender
neutral. Vir is man in the sense of male person. It would only be necessary
to say ad feminam if you wanted to be really specific.
English lacks a few important words, thus leading to all the "neutral
language" nonsense. We lack a word for man in the non-specific sense.
And we could do with a neutral 3rd person singular pronoun. S/he and they
are ugly.
